External Breast Prostheses Reimbursement Program
The Australian Federal Government, in 2009 introduced the much-needed “External Breast Prosthesis Reimbursement Program.
This Federal initiative enables women who have had breast surgery resulting in a Mastectomy or a Lumpectomy to claim up to $400.00 every two years to cover the cost of a Breast Prosthesis. Medicare processes the reimbursement claim.
To be eligible the women has to be:
- A permanent resident of Australia
- Have a Medicare card
- Have had breast surgery as a result of breast cancer or a prophylactic (preventive) procedure due to diagnosis of pre-cancerous cells, non-invasive breast cancer or intraductal cancer.
The total claimable amount is $400.00 every two years; however, if a woman has undergone a bilateral mastectomy she is able to claim up to $800 for the two prosthesis.
If you have private health insurance you should check first with your insurer as to what you can claim though them. If, for example they will cover half the cost of breast prosthesis then the Government will cover the rest, up to the $400 limit.
